Disney announces $1.5b partnership with Epic Games, 'Avatar' included among the properties affected
Enter the Metaverse.
It looks like we could be heading back to Pandora sooner than expected. The Walt Disney Company just announced a $1.5bn investment into developer Epic Games with the intent of expanding their gaming and interactive media offerings. Among other tentpole Disney properties like 'Marvel' and 'Star Wars', Disney also indicated that 'Avatar' is a world to be explored by this new partnership.
In an official statement, Disney called this partnership a "[collaboration] on an all-new games and entertainment universe that will further expand the reach of beloved Disney stories and experiences." This new, persistent universe "will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more."
This announcement comes hot on the heels of the unexpected cancellation of 'Avatar': Reckoning, a mobile-only title that was scheduled for release later this year. Disney primarily holds the licensing rights for the 'Avatar' brand, so this announcement may illuminate why the release trajectory of Reckoning was changed so abruptly.
There is no official timeline for release on this new persistent world. We will continue to update as more details arise.
